Description
Above the body of water that engulfed its predecessors, a humble chapel stands watch in the hills. Despite its weathered look, Roselend Chapel is relatively new. Roselend Dam (seen as just a sliver on the right edge of our photo) was completed in the early 1960s. As the basin below filled with water, the abandoned French village of Roselend – including its Romanesque chapel dating to the 12th century – was fully submerged. This history is told in brief by the chapel's dual bells: the one on the right is an original from the now-sunken chapel, while the shiny one on the left was cast in 2011 (replacing a second original that was stolen in the 1980s).
