Description
This gentle, horned giant is just one of the iconic – and endangered – African species protected here at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in the heart of Kenya. The southern white rhinoceros, once nearly extinct, has made a slow comeback thanks to conservation efforts like those at Ol Pejeta. Sadly, its northern counterpart is in a much tougher spot – Najin and Fatu, a mother-daughter pair of northern white rhinos who also live in Ol Pejeta, are the last of their species on Earth. But they might have a lifeline left – biologists aim to bring the species back from the brink by implanting northern rhino embryos into southern rhino surrogate mothers.
